Education and Outreach Officer, St Andrews Botanic Garden

Salary Range: £25 350 – £33 000
Contract: 40 hours per week

St Andrews Botanic Garden is looking for an Education and Outreach Officer who will lead both the formal and informal education programmes. The post holder will have the opportunity to both teach an established schools programme and receive support to develop further and implement the education strategy for the whole organisation.

The formal education work includes on-site sessions for primary and secondary school pupils, Continuing Professional Development sessions for teachers and taught Adult Education for recreation and professional interest. The Education and Outreach Officer will provide schools with a varied programme of engaging activities linked to the Curriculum for Excellence.

The informal education work includes providing activities and running events for family and general audiences, leading and resourcing regular clubs, development of interpretative trails and materials and contributing to a programme of guided tours. The Education and Outreach Officer will develop a wide range of on-going relationships to support both the formal and informal programme.

The Education and Outreach Officer will work with the Executive Director to develop a long-term vision and strategy for life-long education at St Andrews Botanic Garden, and take the lead on implementation. This will include development of existing programmes, extension of volunteer and tutor teams, contribution to fundraising and grant applications and liaising with key stakeholders including the University of St Andrews and Fife Council.

The Education and Outreach Officer will also develop educational activities for, and attend, community and public events representing the Garden. The post holder will maintain dedicated teaching and gardening spaces with the assistance of a team of volunteers. The Education and Outreach Officer will be expected to work closely with colleagues to contribute to the smooth running of the site.

The Education and Outreach Officer is a senior role at St Andrews Botanic Garden. As such he or she will be expected to contribute to strategic decision-making and consider their role within the context of overall organisational objectives. The Education and Outreach Officer will also be expected to collaboratively integrate education with major and seasonal projects across the Garden.

St Andrews Botanic Garden (SABG) holds an exceptional, diverse and documented botanical collection in 18 beautiful acres, including half an acre of glasshouses. Located in the centre of the iconic town of St Andrews, it benefits from its links to this UK top 5 University and the global tourist interest in St Andrews.

You would be joining SABG at an exciting time in its 126 year history as it refocuses on making its gardens, plants and expertise relevant and accessible to a wider audience. SABG has recently gone through a transition to become an independent charitable trust and is in a challenging time of growth and development. In the past 3 years visitor numbers have increased over 80%, facilities have been upgraded and planning initiated for long-term development. SABG has an income around £580 000 per year and employs 14FTE across a headcount of 23, including seasonal and occasional staff.
