Dr Lauren Daly (Chair)

Secondary Education Officer, The University of Oxford Botanic Garden and Arboretum

As the Secondary Education Officer at Oxford Botanic Garden and Arboretum (OBGA), I strive to inspire all I work with about the wonder of plants and plant sciences.

I discovered my personal interest in plant science late in my education; thanks to a couple of awe-inspiring lectures on plant bio-chemical defence pathways, I quickly changed my degree to Plant Sciences. I often think, what would I know, or what skills could I have further developed, if I had found this interest sooner – and I hope to reach as many young people as possible in my work should studying the natural world be of interest to them.

After my degree, I went on to complete a PhD in wheat genetics and global food security. I enjoyed my time in academia and research, but I wanted a job that was more people focussed as I enjoyed science communications. I particularly enjoy working with teenagers and young adults, as I wish I had discovered my interest in plants at an earlier age. It is my belief that we need the brightest minds of the next generation to work in a plant related field to help us resolve some of humanities greatest challenges – it is our responsibility to inspire and educate those young minds. I further believe digital engagement is key as a hook for the younger generation, and aim to develop online resources using as many different branches of technology as possible, including social media, audio guides and trails and augmented or virtual reality.

In my current role I design, develop and deliver school education programmes, develop collaborative projects with colleagues at University of Oxford or partners at other botanical institutions, and run events such as Meadows Day with a public engagement focus.
Working in a small team, I have also had experience in management, team leadership and with communications and marketing.

BGEN was a fantastic network to discover when new to my career, as it enabled me to network and discuss problems and solutions with experienced peers. It gave me confidence that more experienced fellows were tackling similar problems and their advice and support has been invaluable. I am glad I can support such a friendly and inclusive organisation.
